Wang Deren’s Art Exhibition on Romantic Legend

One of China’s first generation of cutting-edge artists, Wang Deren is once again showing the world an epoch-making legend on the totem of the Galaxy, with “galaxy symbol” as the leading motive.

The large oil-painting series, “Cultural Hero of the Galaxy,” is Wang’s work of tragic theme, imbued with a strong atmosphere of mystery. The inspiration of the huge head of the cultural hero derives from the territory of Africa, and repeatedly stressed by the artist, the core of the gigantic hero is the trinary cultural mode of the Galaxy totem. Devoted to the sacrifice and rebirth of the cultural hero, the painting can be viewed as an artistic and aesthetic myth.

Also on display at this exhibition is a self-portrait series, in which the painter reveals his perception on the orientation of artists and art in social history through the forms of land personification, legends, and sacrificial offering.
